Description

Size: 3ft 10in x 2ft 2in (116 x 67cm).
Antique Yomut Turkmen asmalyk with lattice design.
2nd half 19th century.
This superb example of a Yomut Turkmen asmalyk has an ivory ground with a lattice design which contains the erre gul; the range of colours including a soft blue is outstanding. The madder red border is very well drawn and contains the ashik motif.
Asmalyk were used to decorate the flanks of the camels in the Yomut Turkmen wedding procession, they usually formed part of the brides dowry and were woven in pairs.
The weave is very fine and the asmalyk has a soft floppy handle.
The asmalyk is in original condition with slight even wear and good pile.
The asmalyk has been hand washed and is ready for display.
